“Seeding the Cloud”: Ensuring a More Vibrant, Efficient, and Attractive Nation through Cloud Adoption

Cloud Computing Services as a Key Component of Malaysia’s Digital Aspirations

Cloud computing helps lower operating costs and run organisations’ data more efficiently

Cloud adoption is one of the core pillars of a digital nation. It’s not just important for businesses to adopt the cloud – there is also an increasing need for public services and the government to embrace the cloud to ensure a progressive, efficient, and innovative nation.

The Malaysian government has long acknowledged the importance of cloud computing services as a key component of the nation’s digital aspirations. The Malaysia Digital Economy Blueprint (MyDIGITAL) puts the cloud at the heart of its primary goals and aspirations to become a digital government.

Much of the groundwork has already been laid. For example, in 2010, the Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU) developed the Public Sector Data Centre (PDSA), a government-shared service programme that combines data centres and disaster recovery for government entities.

One of MAMPU’s services includes MyGovCloud@PDSA, which centrally handles cloud hosting services for government agencies. For over a decade, MyGovCloud@PDSA has provided cloud computing services to 204 government agencies.

MDEC has supported and facilitated the Cloud Framework Agreements (CFAs) between private cloud services and the Malaysian government, accelerating cloud adoption in the public sector and helping agencies boost digital skills, saving costs, and driving innovation.

"'Seeding the Cloud' in Malaysia has the effect of making the government faster, more inventive, and more efficient and lays the foundation of a digital ecosystem that makes it ripe for digital investors seeking to expand their horizons to Malaysia. The cloud is a vital component of the Malaysia Digital initiative, which aims to galvanise public- private partnerships to accelerate Malaysia’s transformation into a digital nation that benefits the Rakyat, Businesses, Government, and the Nation,” said MDEC CEO Mahadhir Aziz.
