Play-And-Earn Gaming: A New Reality

Written by Mohan Low, Director - Digital Content Development of MDEC

The gaming industry, now a multi-billion dollar industry, reflects how gaming is a huge part of our current culture, whether casual puzzle games or hardcore multi-player games. The core of any gaming experience is producing fun and enjoyable outcomes through good game design, engaging content, and resilient mechanics.

However, a disruptive force is changing the engagement and investment model of the content industry through the rise of blockchain and decentralised technologies.

Multi-player games can now be played to earn money and to have an enjoyable experience

The concept of ‘play-and-earn has become very popular among some groups of gamers and investors around the world. It has evolved as part of everyday reality for some communities, especially those where the income earned may have a meaningful impact on their lives.

This play-and-earn gaming model has also promoted the rise of the metaverse, a virtual space where players can work, play and socialise. This online gaming space is an evolution of the next form of the internet and where real-world value will be stored.

Fundamentally, the blockchain supported games allow for interesting mechanics, playstyles and investments for studios, investors and players alike. While still believing that fun and engaging content is fundamental in great games, interactive media and animation, we must be cognizant of the opportunities that decentralised technologies and models can provide to content creators.

We at MDEC are very inquisitive to see how far blockchain technologies, the metaverse and the future of gaming, animation and IP creation can play in a meaningful and sustainable way to empower the content ecosystem.

MDEC is closely exploring this unique space as Malaysia Digital and #SayaDigital aims to serve and provide a greater audience in driving the nation’s digitalisation efforts. We are excited about how the new technology introduction could impact our tech ecosystem and increase Malaysia’s competitiveness in the digital economy. It would be a great achievement for Malaysia and the regional community to experiment and explore this space.
