MRM Spearheads Programmes Meant to Boost Industry’s Design Expertise, Capabilities & Standards


Majlis Rekabentuk Malaysia or MRM was established in 1993 to pave a future of innovation and design for Malaysia. It galvanises the effort to spearheads design programmes in the country that aims to boost the industry’s design expertise, capabilities and standards. 


Acclaimed as a non-profit agency, MRM is an agency under 13 other agencies that serve the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI). The agency’s main objective is to work hand-in-hand with Malaysian designers and potential key industries to ensure sustainable development for the future of Malaysian designers. 





Positioned under MITI and SIRIM Berhad as an appointed secretariat to MRM, it carries the obligation as a think tank to encourage innovative designs among Malaysians and to ensure that the local talent is on par with international standards.


For the past 10 years, MRM has strived to promote the effective use of design by embedding design thinking in business, education and governance. To date, it continues with its efforts to elevate designing methods and stimulate creativity among manufacturers. With the guidance and recommendations from MRM, Malaysian companies are now able to move forward and forge a greater bond with consumers through their increased expertise in producing innovative and creative products. 


Five (5) Strategic Thrust: Leading National Talents to Global Recognition

MRM, through its efforts, is aware that in order to market national talents to the world, our designer portfolios need improvement. MRM is the only government agency that bears the responsibility to elevate the nation’s design industry to a reputable stage. To realise the mission at hand, MRM has developed five (5) Strategic Thrust – A design roadmap that emphasises on five distinct determinants; talents, innovation, business and community, market and policy

Talents

Develop a strong pool of knowledgeable expert of designers and practitioners who could be agents of change and potential business leaders. MRM will work on creating teams of local experts from our own nation’s talent pool, befitting of international standards and skill requirements. Talents will be recruited from schools, educational institutions or local industry personnel and trained to realise their potential and reward their efforts through recognition and proper acknowledgement.


MRM, through these initiatives, will document designer portfolios and launch a professional recognition certification – one that dignifies our designer’s talents reputation at its best. Such initiatives are crucial to safeguard our future pool of talented designers, home designers and design consultants that are ready to face the global challenges and catapult the design industry forward.

 






Innovation

Empower innovative design entrepreneurs and design-driven businesses by supporting local designers. MRM intends to accommodate designs as an integral part of the local industries marketing plan to boost their revenue and give the designs added value. 


MRM play a major role in providing design training and design advisory services to the company or local industries to empower design in strategic business planning. It is believed that most of our local industry lack of in-house design talents. To overcome this obstacle, MRM will assist them strategically by applying innovative design structures in business planning and decision making to ensure the company’s mission, vision and objectives are met. 



Business and Community 

Familiarise and democratise design to build a growing community that adopts design to innovate their business processes and enhance the quality of lives. MRM, through these initiatives, is responsible to educate the community or consumers on better design appreciation. Today’s society is likely able to identify and realise the importance of design element in a certain product brand image.


We pay close attention to the product brand, image and designs before making a purchase decision. This phenomenon reflects the community’s acceptance of design importance. Furthermore, MRM will be indirectly involved to educate the society by embedding design syllabus into the nation’s education system. MRM has currently organised many community projects to encourage the innovators and industry key players to produce quality community-driven products. 


Market

“Designed in MALAYSIA” tagline – Malaysian design-driven products and services have been commercialised globally and Malaysia is recognised as a hub for design excellence. This strategic thrust aims to encourage or cultivate awareness amongst Malaysians. 



Policy

Designs to become an integral part of the system - where design techniques are applied for more effective executive policy-making and implementation. With the tagline of empowering new possibilities through design, MRM needs to have a strong design policy in Malaysia and coordinate joint ventures with MyIPO, MIDA, MATRADE and also the Kraftangan Malaysia. This will provide assurances to protect local designers and local manufacturers on their innovative design works. 


Newly reviewed policy amendments are considered essential to ensure a sustainable pool of Malaysian talents that will contribute to the development of the Malaysian design.




In conclusion, MRM five (5) Strategic Thrust initiatives have been regarded as an essential tool to fast track the development and implementation of design with current technology. These will enable swift progress to meet MRM’s goals and vision of making Malaysia the preferred hub for design investment destination.
